Consider Whakamātūtū for clients with a mental injury

Released 27/02/2025

Whakamātūtū is currently accepting referrals for clients in the Wellington region.

Whakamātūtū opened in central Wellington in March 2024, and is a six-week day programme for people with moderate mental injury diagnoses, including, mood disorders, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.
This integrated group therapeutic program is designed to comprehensively address key dimensions that affect a person’s mental health – psychological/emotional, relational, physical, and spiritual.

“We offer something that didn’t previously exist in the Wellington region, that’s complementary to the mental health services that already exist, and we can be an important part of a person’s journey of mental health recovery,” said Whakamātūtū Director Martin Quinn.

“Our expert clinicians come from all parts of the mental health ecosystem and have a focus on evidence-based results. They constantly provide feedback to make sure we continually learn from the experiences of our participants to improve.”
Since we began a pilot of the programme in March 2024, 37 ACC kiritaki have participated in the programme. The pilot, which continues until January 2026, will help us determine if an integrated, community-based service is an effective option for clients with a moderate mental injury.

How to participate

To participate in the programme, kiritaki must meet the eligibility criteria, have an accepted ACC claim, and be based in the Wellington region or have other living arrangements in Wellington while participating in the programme. If you have a client who would benefit from participating in Whakamātūtū, please:
