ACC45 number change

Released 22/02/2023

We are reaching the end of the current pool of available ACC45 claim numbers.

Based on trends, we expect to run out of numbers in our current format in the next couple of years. To prepare for this, we will be making changes to the ACC45 number format to ensure that we can continue to support our clients and providers being able to lodge future ACC45 claims.

Current and future number formats

Currently, our ACC45 numbers are two letters followed by five numbers, for example, AB12345.

Our future numbers will be in two new formats:

  • Five numbers followed by two letters - 12345AB
  • Four numbers followed by three letters - 1234ABC

Paper ACC45 claim forms will exclusively use the new number format, 12345AB, while electronic forms can use all three formats.

This change will create roughly 174 million new numbers. These changes are the next step in the continual expansion of our digital offerings.

The existing ACC45 number format will continue to be accepted.

How to prepare for the change

We suggest checking any in-house systems where you store or record ACC45 numbers to ensure they can accommodate the new format.

Those who use Practice Management Systems (PMS) will not need to do anything differently. We will work with the PMS Vendors to ensure they are ready for the additional formatting.

PMS Vendors will be contacted directly about the changes required.

Those who use paper-based forms will not need to do anything differently. We will begin printing the new formats on paper forms over the next several months.

Those who have their own bespoke systems for submitting claims to ACC may require changes to their systems.

Claim Number Allocation API

We have also completed building our long-term solution of allocating ACC45 numbers on demand through the Claim Number Allocation API (Application Programming Interface).

Now is a great time for PMS Vendors to upgrade and take advantage of the Claim Number Allocation API.

If your practice is still requesting blocks of ACC45 numbers from ACC then we suggest that you contact your PMS vendor to integrate with this API service. The API will automate the allocation of the ACC45 claim numbers removing the need to wait for manual number allocation.

More information on the API in our Developer Resource Centre

We aim to finish our development and testing of the new number formats over the next few months. Once this is done, we will let you know.
