To help fund the scheme, ACC levies are paid by everyone who works or owns a business in New Zealand, so we can provide support when it’s needed.

When you start in self-employment, you’re automatically covered by ACC CoverPlus.

Find out more about CoverPlus

Self-employed levies differ from being an employee because you're invoiced directly by ACC, and they are separate from general tax. The levy you pay depends on:

  • how much you earn (we receive this information from Inland Revenue)
  • your Classification Unit (CU), this tells us what industry you work in, the kind of work you do, and potential risk of injury
  • if you've worked part-time or full-time (if earning under the full-time minimum)

It’s important we have this information correct, because industries that have a higher risk of injury will pay a higher ACC levy.

ACC CoverPlus provides reassurance that if something happens to you, we can help with the cost of treatment, recovery, returning to work, and loss of income if you can't work because of an injury.

We also have CoverPlus Extra (CPX), an optional cover product, allowing you to choose how much of your income you want to be covered if you have an accident and can't work.
