Improving Pasifika access to ACC
ACC is developing a strategy to help Pasifika in Aotearoa get the support they need.
The story of Pacific peoples in Aotearoa continues to evolve
Currently, they make up over eight per cent of the total population. More than 60 per cent of the total Pacific population are born in New Zealand.
However, they account for only six per cent of ACC claims lodged annually. They also represent just five per cent of total claims costs.
We want Pasifika to engage with ACC when they need us, but we know there are barriers in the way. To change this, we are embarking on a journey to do a better job of serving Aotearoa’s unique and diverse Pasifika communities.
Better access to the support they need means that Pasifika communities in Aotearoa can continue to thrive.
What is meant by the word ‘Pasifika’?
Pasifika (sometimes spelt Pasefika) is used to refer to the people, cultures, and language of Pacific groups including: Sāmoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and other Pacific nations – who are now living in New Zealand.

Helping Pasifika people get the support they deserve
To better serve Aotearoa’s diverse Pasifika communities, we’re developing a Pasifika Strategy.
The strategy will focus on improving engagement, service responsiveness, and relationships with Pasifika people and communities.
Working with Pasifika stakeholders across the country, the strategy signals our commitment to address inequities facing Pasifika peoples. Language barriers, culturally safe services, and cost may be some challenges contributing to these inequities.
Pacific people need to be at the decision-making table to drive change. Our aspirations will see government working together with communities to better support the needs of our Pasifika communities.
