Kirsten Malpas – “So we're here for three key reasons where we're really pleased to be back firstly this is our third year
Kirsten Malpas – “The reasons are basically concussions so we're really wanting to work with the kids to raise awareness about concussion. Our SportSmart warm-up –“
Kirsten Malpas – “We're getting it out there with our main sporting partners and also helping kids understand the importance of having some chill-out time at the end of their games”
Kirsten Malpas – “So our main thing with concussion this year is we really want people to remember the '3 Rs' of concussion. And they are recognizing the signs, removing the person from play and referring them to a doctor.”
Kirsten Malpas – “The signs of concussion there's a heap of them. There's probably about 20. You don't need to have all the concussion signs to be concussed.”
Kirsten Malpas – “You don't need to have been knocked out to be concussed. It can be a decent blow to the body or the head - shakes the brain around in the skull and some of the signs can be blurred vision, fainting, you can have a sore neck or a sore head, loss of appetite, more grumpiness than normal you need to ask your parents if you're more grumpy than normal.”
Kirsten Malpas – “If you've got any of those or you notice you mate has had something happen to them that might be concussion you need to then get them to stop what they're doing. So stop the play and get them to the sidelines or get them to stop biking if they were biking and then you need to refer them to a doctor. That needs to happen within 24 hours.”
Kirsten Malpas – “We're calling them ghost concussions because estimates are that one in ten concussions in this age group are going undiagnosed. And because concussion's an invisible injury from the get-go it's more of a concern that there's one in ten that are missing out on the treatment they need."
