The final report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care has been presented to Parliament and released to the public.

This is a report of historical significance and is the result of the largest and most complex public inquiry ever held in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Royal Commission looked into what happened to tamariki, rangatahi and adults in State and faith-based care in Aotearoa New Zealand between 1950 and 1999.

Whanaketia: Through pain and trauma, from darkness to light

We recognise the significance of this Royal Commission of Inquiry, and acknowledge the bravery and courage of all survivors of abuse in care, including those who shared their experiences with the Royal Commission.

ACC is relevant to the inquiry as abuse in care can result in physical and mental injuries which are potentially coverable by ACC.

We’re working closely with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the Crown Response Unit to review the Royal Commission’s report and recommendations. This process may take some time and will require collaboration across government given the recommendations cross over into several agency’s work.

We acknowledge it can sometimes be difficult to navigate and access ACC supports. We have multiple programmes of work in place to help us provide more inclusive, accessible and responsive support services to people who have experienced sexual violence.
