Staying safe on the mountain bike trails

Mountain biking is one of our favourite summer activities and we have some of the best trails in the world. But injuries peak at this time of year, so here’s some advice on how to stay safe.

It’s hard to beat a good Kiwi summer down under.

When the sun’s out in New Zealand, we all love to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather by doing some of our favourite activities.

But unfortunately this can lead to a noticeable increase in injuries.

Luckily, many of these injuries are preventable, so we’re encouraging New Zealanders to ‘Have a hmmm’ before they jump in this summer.

Mountain biking is a good example.

An adrenaline-pumping ride down a mountain brings a certain amount of danger but there’s a lot you can do to reduce the risk of hurting yourself or others.

Here’s a few important tips to keep you and your whānau safe when enjoying mountain biking this summer:

  • Take a mountain bike skills course – learn the skills to love your ride.
  • Slow down before you speed up – ride the trail multiple times to get familiar with the features.
  • Check out the trail grades at the start of each trail – these are the best indication of the level of trail you’re about to ride.
  • Do an equipment check each time you ride – bike, helmet and riding gear.

Check out the video at the top of this page for some handy hints on making sure your bike is ride ready.
