Nymbl now helping improve bladder health

Nymbl, a strength and balance training app provided by ACC, now has a new feature that aims to improve bladder health and reduce the risk of bladder issues.
It’s been one of ACC’s most successful injury prevention tools and now we’re evolving it’s product offering to promote bladder health.
ACC launched Nymbl last year as part of our Live Stronger for Longer injury prevention programme.
It’s a strength and balance app designed to help older New Zealanders keep their independence.
In that time, almost 45,000 older adults around Aotearoa have downloaded the free app and are enjoying the benefits of being steadier on their feet and more confident.
“Falls have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, especially if they result in a fracture, so we want to do what we can to prevent them from happening in the first place,” says James Whitaker, ACC Injury Prevention Programme Lead.
“Our research shows simple body movements improve balance and reduce the risk of falls by almost a third. By investing 10 minutes a day in Nymbl a few times a week, you can improve your balance and maintain your independence.”
App evolves to include Nymbl Bladder
Continuous improvement has seen the app evolve with the introduction of Nymbl Bladder.
It’s a new feature that aims to improve bladder health and reduce the risk of bladder issues.
Urinary urgency (having to rush to the bathroom) is the third most common chronic condition of aging.
The Nymbl website says a total of 44 per cent of polled Nymbl Balance users aged 60-plus have urinary urgency.
And 50 per cent of adults over 50 suffer from nocturia (waking up to go to the toilet multiple times at night).
“Many people aren’t aware bladder issues are treatable,” James says.
“They believe the symptoms they experience are part of the aging process.”
Regaining control of your bladder
The Nymbl app now offers a personalised and evidence-based programme that combines pelvic floor exercises, bladder training and lifestyle tips to help older adults regain control of their bladder and confidence in their daily activities.
Research indicates addressing bladder issues can positively affect falls reduction, as maintaining good bladder health can prevent the urgency and frequency that may lead to falls.
Therefore, any programme or intervention which can address a contributing factor to falls, such as bladder issues, is valuable in the broader context of injury prevention and falls management.
Nymbl Bladder is designed to be an easy, fun and effective way to improve bladder health in as little as 12 weeks.
It’s free and can be accessed from within the Nymbl app.
It helps people take control of their symptoms, on their own schedule and is based on the evidence of experts.
“Bladder health can be a touchy subject,” says Bob Mirsky, the Chief Medical Officer for Nymbl.
“We created Nymbl Bladder to empower you to tackle common bladder symptoms – from home, at your own pace.”
